How Long Does It Take to Build an App and What Does It Depend On?

June 18, 2026 · Michał Masłowski

It is one of the first questions we hear from small companies and startups: how long does it take to build an app? The answer „it depends" is true but not very helpful. In this article we give concrete timelines for the most common project types and show how a Scrum schedule works, so you can estimate how long your idea will take yourself.

What does the delivery time depend on?

App build time is not a single number but the result of several variables. The most important are:

  • Scope of features - 5 screens is not the same as 50. The more logic, the longer it takes.
  • Integrations - payments, external systems, CRM or ERP extend the project.
  • Number of platforms - a web app alone is faster than web + iOS + Android.
  • State of the requirements - a ready specification speeds up the start; missing mockups delays it.
  • Client decision-making - fast approvals shorten every sprint.

At Exmoor Software we work in the Expert + AI model, which genuinely cuts the coding stage for repetitive elements (forms, tests, documentation) by 20-30%. Time, however, does not come only from writing code - a large part is analysis, testing and deployment.

Realistic timelines per app type

The table below shows approximate timelines for the projects we deliver most often. It is a starting point for a conversation, not a rigid promise.

MVP - 4 to 8 weeks

An MVP (Minimum Viable Product) is the smallest working version of a product that lets you gather user feedback. For a startup it is often the best start - instead of building everything, you validate the idea in 1.5-2 months. Read more about the approach in our software development service.

CRM system or industry panel - 8 to 16 weeks

Systems with multiple user roles, reporting and integrations require solid architecture. Here time grows mainly because of the number of modules and integrations, not just the number of screens.

Mobile app - 10 to 20 weeks

A mobile app means two platforms, testing on real devices and a store publication process (App Store, Google Play) that itself takes a few days. Details are in our mobile apps service description.

What does a Scrum schedule look like?

We work in Scrum, splitting the project into sprints (usually 2 weeks). This way you see a working version of the app every two weeks, not only at the end. A typical flow:

  • Discovery (3-7 days) - workshop, mockups, scope and priorities.
  • Sprint 0 (1 week) - environment, architecture and backlog setup.
  • Development sprints (2 weeks each) - coding, demo at the end of each sprint, course correction.
  • Stabilization and testing (1-2 weeks) - acceptance tests, fixes, optimization.
  • Deployment and support - release and post-launch care.

Why do sprints reduce risk?

Because you do not wait months for the result. After each sprint you can change priorities, add a feature or drop an unnecessary one. This protects the budget - you pay for what you actually need. If you are unsure about scope, a technical consultation before the start can help.

How to speed up the project?

  • Prepare a must-have feature list and postpone „nice-to-have" items.
  • Appoint one decision-maker on your side.
  • Start with an MVP, not the full product vision.
  • Respond quickly to the team's questions and review demos on time.

Summary

The most honest answer to „how long does it take to build an app" is: from 1 week for a small module, through 4-8 weeks for an MVP, up to 10-20 weeks for a complex mobile app. The key is a well-defined scope and working in sprints, which eliminates surprises.
